NCMEC - Keeping Kids Safer:

Keeping Kids Safer
Tips you can trust
Safety Tips for the Holidays

Make your family holiday outings safer and more enjoyable by reviewing the following safety tips before you head out to the local mall or public event.
  1. When in a public facility always supervise your children, and ALWAYS accompany young children to the restroom. Make certain your children know to stay with you at all times while shopping and always CHECK FIRST with you or the person in charge before they go anywhere. It is important to know where your children are and who they are with at all times.
  2. If older children become separated from you while holiday shopping, have them meet you in a predesignated spot such as the sales counter of the store you were in or the mall's information booth. Teach younger children to look for people who may be sources of help within the store or mall such as a uniformed law-enforcement or security officer, store salesperson with a nametag, person with a nametag who is working in the information booth, or mother with children. They should stay close to where they first became separated and NEVER leave the store/mall or go to the parking lot to look for you or your vehicle.

1-800-THE-LOST

On October 19, 1984, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s (NCMEC) Call Center opened for business. Twenty-seven years later, more than 3,000,000 calls for service have been handled.
The Call Center was created by the U.S. Congress to serve as the nation’s national reporting system for missing children. Considered “the nerve center” of the National Center, the toll-free Call Center receives calls for service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The Call Center processes reports of missing children, reports of sightings of a missing child, or requests for resources to assist in abduction or sexual exploitation cases and can handle calls in more than 180 languages.

If you think you have seen a missing child or need assistance, contact the National Center at 1-800-THE-LOST (1-800-843-5678).

Multiple Cybertips Lead to Arrest of Suspect Posting Child Pornography Online

On June 9, 2009, the CyberTipline received a complaint from a concerned citizen, who reported that he had been in contact with an adult male making sexually suggestive comments about underage females. During their three-hour chat session, the suspect stated that he “preferred” nine to 15-year-old girls. The reporting person provided the full chat log, along with crucial information about the suspect, including his full name, age, location, and email address.

NOTES FROM NCMEC

Child Sexual Exploitation
The National Center has been fighting child sexual exploitation for more than 20 years. Yet for millions of families, we're only known for our work in finding missing children. Many families who need our services aren't aware of our resources to help. Which is why we've launched a national campaign to raise awareness about NCMEC's vital role in this battle.

YOU Make a Difference

Want to make a difference?

Consider these additional ways to give to the National Center:
  • Give a donation in honor of a friend instead of sending them a traditional gift.
  • Make a donation in memory of a loved one in lieu of sending flowers.
When you donate through our website, and provide the contact information for the person you would like to be notified of your gift, we will send a note card letting them know of your generosity on their behalf. You can also call our Development Department at 866-411-KIDS to make a donation.
