Walmart Poster Leads to Safe Recovery of Critically Missing Teen
On Dec. 6, 2011 the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) was contacted by a social worker in San Diego County seeking assistance in looking for a 17-year-old girl who had gone missing the previous day from a group home.

The teen, who had previously been listed as missing with NCMEC and the police, was recently located by authorities attempting to enter the United States from Tijuana at the international border crossing. Upon discovering that the teen had gone missing again, police detectives and NCMEC’s Case Management Team immediately suspected that the teen had returned to Mexico, where it was believed she was prostituting.

NCMEC coordinated resources with the child’s social worker and the San Diego Police Department, including the creation and distribution of the child’s poster in both English and Spanish in and around the San Diego and Tijuana area and surrounding states.

On June 1, 2012, NCMEC received a lead from a caller in Phoenix, Arizona, who recognized the child from a NCMEC poster featured at the local Walmart store. The caller had seen the child the previous week while visiting a small resort town in Mexico about an hour south of San Diego. The caller believed the child was residing with her mother, and due to financial issues, the two frequently moved around and stayed with men who would let them live at their place for a couple of days at a time. The caller noted that they had concerns that the child could be prostituting or performing sexual favors for her room and board.

Upon receiving the tip, the Case Manager reached out to NCMEC’s Child Sex Trafficking Team and began liaising with Department of Homeland Security, and Agents stationed near Tijuana, Mexico were notified of the case. On June 8th, NCMEC received confirmation that the child had been safely located and recovered by Mexican officials in Ensenada, Baja California thanks to the lead that came in through NCMEC’s 24-hour hotline.
